"… Excuse me?”

"Its not exactly my thing either." He grinned, moving and leaning against the wall, huffing up at his hair. "Was worth the try, you are pretty cute. But ah… I don’t enjoy being forced into these things." He chuckled, looking over at her. "I’m Onyx, by the way. And ah… I’m assuming that’s also a no about this whole… thing."

"No- I mean, yes- well- Jiminy Christmas, I dinnae." She raised an eyebrow, glancing at him. "An’ don’t call me cute. I hate bein’ called cute." Mostly because it didn’t translate to attractive, it translated to weak and tiny, all of which she was not. "Look, pal, I dunno about how you got into this, but I signed a contract an’ was not aware it included arranged marriages."

"Oh?"

Well. This was a revelation, of sorts. She had expected to at least go until her 21st birthday, which was only a few weeks away, before Lantern started finding suitors. Apparently not. She couldn’t blame him for not trusting her to run the kingdom alone, but this was… unexpected. To say the least.

The man that stood before her didn’t look particularly refined (thank the Lord, the last thing she needed was another man telling her she was too wild for the throne) and that made her wonder what exactly had made him the one to be chosen. A noble fallen on hard times, maybe? One of the knights from her father’s court, before he had died, looking to return to the service?

Still, she had to be polite, if she was going to be marrying this man. And first impressions were everything, whether or not she was terrified of the prospect.

"It is… a pleasure to meet you."

Aster barely listened to her prattle on about the reception.  He honestly couldn’t care about the size of the reception - was actually glad it was small.  But he was curious about the blush.

He gave her a once over again.  She looked to be the part of a princess, but he had a feeling she was everything but.  It gave him just an inkling of hope - then he was suddenly jerking into motion.

"Absolutely let’s get the fuck out of ‘ere."  Aster nodded, quickly grabbing her arm and tugging her forward.  "Small reception or not, Ah’m not a party or court type.  Far as Ah’m concerned the lot of ‘em can go sit on their thumbs."

"Holy-!!" Okay, she hadn’t been expecting that. Lack of refinement was right, the guy had absolutely no manners. Maybe there was hope for this engagement yet.

Autumn glanced over her shoulder at Lantern, talking with some dignitaries, probably from Aster’s kingdom. She hurried after the guy, trying not to trip over herself. (Oh, she hated these stupid dresses.)

"N-not the court type, huh?" she asked once they were outside the courtroom. "Me neither- though the political games can be good entertainment. The gardens are this way, if you’re still interested," she added, pointing down a hallway that lead outside.

Still, she had to be polite, if she was going to be marrying this man. And first impressions were everything, whether or not she was terrified of the prospect.

"It is… a pleasure to meet you."

How did he get roped into doing these damn things?  He wasn’t even the liked kit in the family, in fact he was damn near dreaded - curse and all.  Not to mention he really hadn’t put much work into looking the Princely part.  Soon as his mother vanished from his side he’d ruffled his hair back to where it should have been and loosened the first button on his collar.

Still…it could have been worse.  The sheila he was supposed to marry wasn’t bad looking in the least.  In fact she was outright gorgeous, to be frank.  Yet he still had yet to get to know her.  Initial attraction wasn’t going to make this forced marriage any better for him - especially since he’d been outright vocal about being against it.  He was hoping she had a lot more to her than just her looks alone, otherwise the next century or so was going to be miserable.

"Pleasure ta meet ya as well."  Aster gave a bow and scooped up her hand to give it a brief kiss on the knuckles before he dropped it quickly and straightened.  "Prince E. Aster Bunnymund."

Autumn felt her face heat up and cursed herself internally. She never had gotten used to all the hand-kissing in the courts- mostly because she’d skipped half the meetings where that occurred.

She nodded, folding her hands in front of her like she was supposed to. So far, so good. If she could get through this without saying something stupid, it would be her first success in a while. “I’m sorry the reception wasn’t bigger, I… was only recently informed of our engagement.” But it could be worse. A lot worse- he was young, incredibly handsome, and had the status Lantern had surely chosen him for.

"Would you like to take a look around the castle?" she asked, nodding to the doors at the end of the throne room. "It’s awfully stuffy in here, and the gardens are beautiful right now."

"… Excuse me?”

"Yeah, well… you know how these things are… whatever the case, its a pleasure to meet you." He grinned cheekily, taking a small bow afterwards and looking up at the girl. "I know I’m not exactly much, and to be honest I’m not one who appreciates being given orders, let alone being told who I’ll marry. So, how about um… well, seeing as how I’d like to get to know you first, um… Would you care to go on a date?"

Autumn took a step backwards. She did not want this. No way, no how. Arranged marriages were not her deal. Dating was not her deal, courting was not her deal, none of this was even remotely near to what her deal could possibly be. Even if he was good-looking. “See, I would, but… no.”

Our muses are supposed to be married in an arranged marriage in two weeks. Send me “I’m your future husband/wife.” For my muses reaction to their first meeting and getting the news.

So they had meant it? She had not believed them, the group of spirits had said they would accept her into their ranks if she were to wed one of their own. She had agreed, but why? Well she hadn’t expected some one to think themselves, group or not, to have the will or power to subjugate Mother Nature in that fashion.

Perhaps it was that old bit of arrogance in her, that still kept herself semi confident in her pursuing not to become obsolete in a changing world. She had shot herself in the foot.

Seraphina had a relatively blank expression, though it certainly held shock and surprise, perhaps even a bit of worry. Marriage scared her, more than anything now that she looked the spirit in the face who was her betrothed.

Finding words were difficult, and she cleared her throat, and then choked on her own voice with a frustrated rumble. Closing her eyes with a deep sigh, she finally managed to speak. “It… it is a… I apologize if I appear dumbstruck… I didn’t believe them when they said this was part of the arrangement. I am Seraphina… and this is my home.” She gestured to the whole of the realm she was in, an alcove of magic in the barrens of the high Himalayan’s.

"Two weeks is the wedding?" She swallowed, her mouth dry.

She saw the hesitance in him and felt remotely comforted that she was not the only one who felt… well as pieces to the game of someone else. Seraphina wouldn’t doubt that two weeks would go by far too fast.

As she watched him she gave a smile, it pulled at her lips with ease, his name was interesting, she liked it. He had a charm about him, and he was appealing with those freckles and vibrant hair.  ”Thank you Lantern.  I would say this place is my masterpiece, a cradle of all existing life should things falter outside… Lightbringer? I am afraid I am not familiar with the title, what do you do in the realm?”

She knew far more about the planet and its natural system. Her lack of knowledge or connection with the realm she was once at the height of was why she was where she was now.

Oh, she was cute. Definitely a plus to this whole deal.

"What do I do in the realm- well, fer starters, I bring light, as the title would suggest." He held out his palm and an orange light glowed above it, taking the form of a flower. "The premier user o’ light magic, as it were. No one better." The light faded and he crossed his arms behind his back again.

"I protect children, as well. Particularly those who might wander astray during All Hallow’s Eve, when the line between worlds are blurred an’ it’s easier for them to enter one not their own."
